EDM Wirecuts

Sodick AP250L

Overview:

The AP250L Wire EDM showcases Sodick’s Linear Motor Technology, setting a high standard in the AP Series of high-end, high-precision Wire EDM machines. Available with either oil or water dielectric, the AP250L features the innovative Eco-Cut O technology on the oil dielectric model. This oil-based technology allows for carbide machining without cobalt depletion, offering low specific inductive capacity and a small discharge gap, making it ideal for high-precision, high-speed die applications. Carbide workpieces can remain in the work tank for extended periods, making it perfect for overnight or weekend machining.

Sodick’s AP250L, driven by a flat, rigid linear motor, excels in high-precision micro machining. Its combination of the linear motor drive system and bridge design significantly enhances positioning and machining accuracy, utilizing backlash-free precise axis movement and minimizing machine structure deformation. This ensures long-term maintenance of high initial machining accuracy. Sodick offers a 10-Year Positioning Accuracy Guarantee, providing customers with long-term confidence in their EDM machines.

The AP250L features the newly developed SPW power supply unit and "Perfect Active Control" technology, utilizing 1 Gbit/sec serial communication for high-speed discharge and motion control processing.

The AP Series is designed for energy efficiency, reducing average energy consumption by up to 60% compared to conventional EDMs. Eco-Cut O technology, exclusive to the AP250L, enables incredible machining speeds using oil dielectric. It combines the optimal surface finish of oil dielectric with the speed of water dielectric, achieving machining speeds up to 12% faster than water dielectric and 25% faster than conventional oil dielectric. This technology accelerates the cutting process, achieving accuracy and surface finish with fewer cuts.

The high-speed, automatic annealing wire threader enhances wire straightness, improving AWT repeatability, especially at larger Z heights. The annealing process heats, stretches, and cuts the wire to a sharp point, reducing the required wire guide clearance and enhancing part accuracy. The annealing AWT can thread in submerged mode, eliminating the need to drain the worktank for wire threading. The Z-axis position automatically adjusts the dielectric fluid for the operator.

Using oil dielectric eliminates cobalt depletion in carbide machining, unlike water dielectric, which causes corrosion and electrolysis. Carbide workpieces can remain in the work tank for extended periods without corrosion, unlike water dielectric, where the workpiece must be removed immediately post-machining. The smaller gap between the wire and workpiece with oil dielectric, due to the lower spark intensity, is ideal for precision machining in high-speed die applications.

The three-sided rise/fall worktank ensures ample setup space and ergonomic accessibility. The sliding sides reduce the required operating space and maintain a clean shop floor with the no-drip feature. The fluid level adjusts automatically to the workpiece thickness, and the slide tank can be stopped at intermediate positions, allowing for easy progress checks even on thin workpieces.

Temperature sensing and the Thermal Commit (TH COM) function provide precise temperature corrections for each machine component, minimizing thermal displacement caused by environmental temperature changes and high-speed operations, and offering various diagnostic functions.
